Adolescent Substance Use Disorder Clinical Pathways

In the literature on evidence-based medicine, a clinical pathways system is presented as a comprehensive treatment model that targets the specific strategies associated with a homogeneous patient group, in this case adolescents with substance use disorder. Clinical pathways in medicine are designed to address the high risks involved when managing patient care. The system includes three major facets: (1) a method for understanding the major features of the disease that requires treatment, including understanding the etiology of the disease; (2) treatment planning using standards for clinical practice and the organization of necessary resources, and finally, (3) treatment methods, including the application of evidenced-based treatment for the disease. According to De Blesser et al. (2006), “The aim of a clinical pathway is to improve the quality of care, reduce risks, increase patient satisfaction, and increase the efficiency in the use of resources.” This course will prepare you to achieve those goals when treating adolescents with substance use disorders. This course is intended for licensed and licensed-eligible clinicians who work with adolescents and their families to address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues.
