Self-Advocacy and Recovery for Persons with Mental Health Disorders

At its most basic level, self-advocacy means standing up for yourself and finding your voice. Mental health clients do not always exercise their right to do this. Therefore, the client’s needs are sometimes left unmet. A recovery approach views the client as the expert on their own life. This approach empowers clients to take a leading role in their care. This includes getting their needs met. The long-standing movement towards recovery for all persons with mental health disorders has created the need for specific information for advocating for this population. Client advocates can teach individuals the importance of self-advocacy. They can also teach the skills needed to be an effective self-advocate and overcome barriers.

The goal of this course is to provide case management and care management professionals along with non-licensed direct care providers in health and human services settings with information and strategies to support self-advocacy and recovery for persons with behavioral health disorders.
